Tension-type headaches are the most common headache disorder, affecting up to 78% of the general population at some point in their lives. They cause a pressing, tightening sensation — often described as a band around the head — and are linked to muscle tension, stress, and cervical spine dysfunction. Chiropractic care offers a safe, drug-free alternative to over-the-counter pain medications.

Common Symptoms

  • Dull, aching pressure on both sides of the head

  • A feeling of tightness across the forehead, temples, or back of the head

  • Scalp, neck, and shoulder muscle tenderness

  • Worsened by stress, poor posture, or prolonged screen time

  • Not typically associated with nausea, light sensitivity, or aura

What Causes Tension Headaches?

Tension headaches are triggered by muscle tension in the neck and scalp, stress, poor posture, fatigue, and cervical joint dysfunction. Frequent use of pain medications can paradoxically cause medication overuse headache, making chiropractic care a particularly valuable non-drug approach.

How Chiropractic Care Helps

Chiropractic spinal manipulation and soft tissue therapy target the cervical spine and upper thoracic region, directly addressing the musculoskeletal drivers of tension headaches. A 2024 study found that patients with tension-type headaches who received spinal manipulative therapy were significantly less likely to require headache medications over a 2-year follow-up period.
