Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction refers to problems with the jaw joint and the muscles that control jaw movement. It causes pain and dysfunction that can affect eating, talking, and sleeping quality. The TMJ is closely linked to the upper cervical spine, making chiropractic care a natural and effective fit for treatment.

Common Symptoms

  • Jaw pain, especially when chewing, yawning, or talking

  • Clicking, popping, or grinding sounds in the jaw

  • Headaches and facial pain

  • Earache or a feeling of fullness in the ears

  • Difficulty fully opening or closing the mouth

What Causes TMJ Dysfunction?

TMJ disorders are caused by jaw joint misalignment, disc displacement within the joint, arthritis, teeth grinding (bruxism), trauma, or prolonged stress. There is a well-established neurological and biomechanical link between upper cervical misalignment and TMJ dysfunction — the muscles of the jaw and upper neck are deeply interconnected.

How Chiropractic Care Helps

Chiropractic treatment for TMJ focuses on restoring normal upper cervical alignment and addressing muscle imbalances around the jaw and neck. Manipulation of the C1-C2 vertebrae can reduce the neuromuscular tension contributing to jaw dysfunction. We may incorporate myofascial release techniques around the jaw and neck, and we coordinate care with your dentist when appropriate. Many patients with TMJ disorders simultaneously have cervicogenic headaches that respond to the same treatment.
